Swollen feet are a common problem for pregnant women, but recent research indicates that changes in foot size This can survive up to after giving birth and even permanent. You may need a shoe with a bigger size after giving birth.

Swelling of feet during pregnancy is usually caused by the baby's weight gain that makes soles of the feet of pregnant women flatten the curve and increase the size of the foot.

A new study published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, asserted that swelling and the loss of environment from soles of the feet it is permanent even though the pregnancy has passed.

"We've heard some women complain that his shoe size increase after pregnancy and giving birth, so that came the idea to investigate this matter," said Dr. Neil Segal, professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at the University of Iowa. Segal decided to study the scientific reason behind the increase in size of the foot by measuring swelling of legs 49 pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy and then 5 months after birth.

Research results show that between 60 to 70 percent of participants experienced a change in the length and width of the foot, even though the pregnancy has passed 5 months in duration. This suggests that pregnancy indeed result in permanent changes in the feet. Environment of the foot which was originally flat when pregnant, will disappears slowly and are no longer swollen but causing size length of feet increased up to 2-10 millimeters.

The study also found that women who pregnant the first time, may will experience swelling of the feet of the biggest, while the second pregnancy, third, or more does not change the size of length of the foot only increase slightly in width.

"Slack ligaments feet up to make the increase in size, are affected by the same hormone that is released to relax the pelvic muscles during pregnancy. Moreover, the increased body weight of pregnancy can reduce the arch and adds length and width of the foot," said Dr. Bret Ribosky of the American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine, approved the study.

Because changes in shape of the foot such as this, women tend to experience an increased risk of arthritis or joint pain. When the legs experiencing changes in shape, function of joints and bones on the palms in sustaining weight also experience changes. For who are physically active, these changes also affect the balance when standing or walking.

There is a change on the shape of the foot when a woman experiences pregnant and have children well as explain the vulnerability of women to joints problems. Compared to men, women are more susceptible experiencing a disturbances on the feet, limbs and spine.
