Alcohol Make Men Reduced Levels of Empathy

Alcohol consumption seems to not only make a reduced level of consciousness. Because men who consume alcohol will make reduced levels of empathy and communication difficult.

A study found male alcoholics tend to have less empathy and have a view of irony, so there is likely to have difficulty understanding the complex form of communication.

Empathy is the ability to understand other people's feelings and the irony is a communication technique that uses satire words whose meaning is the opposite of the actual conditions.

The study involved 22 men who like to consume alcohol and 22 male controls were non-drinkers. Participants were asked to read a story of irony and non-irony, and then completed a questionnaire about the emotional character of the story. And compared with the capacity for empathy.

Given the alcoholics showed a lack of empathy and misunderstanding with intended irony stories like it as entertainment. While men control find irony in the story expressed negative attitudes and emotions.

"The findings seem to indicate that alcoholics showed a decreased ability to understand complex form of communication," says Simona Amenta, researchers at the University of Milano-Bicocca, as quoted from Health24, Saturday (11/10/2012).

This is due to continuous consumption of alcohol can damage mental health such as reduced empathy, as well as memory which can weaken a person's memory and cognitive abilities.

In addition, other adverse effects of alcohol can worsen the condition of the body is functioning liver filter toxins in the body. As well as increasing the risk of chronic liver disease, heart disease and stroke.
